"Dreamer" (What did she say, dad? She says she wants to run..). Think you need a whip to win a race? Nope. An early lesson that I never forgot was a horse race against a friend when we were about 12 years old. She had her own horse and I was renting a lesson horse from the stables where we rode; we had gone on a short trail ride through woods and come out in the apple orchard. The young apple trees were supported by a wire fence which created a series of nice straight paths and made the perfect "raceway". The key factor in this tale is that I absolutely loved the feeling of flying on horseback (I had big plans to be a jockey because I was really small, but when I hit 5'8" figured that was probably not gonna happen) Anyway, we raced down our respective straightaways to the finish line. When I won, she announced that I had the better racehorse and did I want to switch? Well, duh (of course I was dying to ride her horse who was waaayyyy cooler than my rented lesson horse), so we did it again. Interestingly enough, I beat her a second time on her horse. Hmmmm...why? What was the difference? I wasn't lighter than she nor was I a much better rider. No crop, no spurs either. The difference? Simple; she liked to run and I loved to run. Your feelings can sometimes make or break you in competition and definitely influence things as a rider; Why? Because your horse will pick up on all of them (amazing, huh? :o)
Think horses can't be competitive amongst themselves? Sure they can. I've watched Rina and Taya running together competitively at play and seen Rina check herself (slow down), deliberately letting Taya pull ahead. Just when it seemed Taya was going to be "the winner" I'd watch Rina pour it on and literally fly past Taya (then drop back to a trot to make her own little victory loop; swishing her tail and tossing her head in the equine version of Ha-Ha-Ha I Beat You :o)
